CAB for withdrawal of water tariff hike

CHATTOGRAM, Jan 10: Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has protested a decision taken by the Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) to increase water tariff by 5 per cent from February this year.
The leaders of CAB Chittagong regional chapter in a statement also demanded withdrawal of the decision the CWASA took in its board meeting recently.
Water tariff hike will have a negative impact on the consumers as it will raise their cost of living, they added.
The WASA should rather check water pilferage, snap all illegal connections and stop water wastage and harassment of the consumers who have to pay extra bills prepared by a section of WASA employees.
They alleged that a huge quantity of water is being drained out of the pipeline at different points across the city and all these misdeeds are taking place in connivance with the officials and field level employees.
But the authority did never take any proper steps against those 'culprits' inside and outside CWASA, they claimed.
The statement was signed by CAB central vice president SM Nazer Hossain, Chattogram divisional general secretary Kazi Iqbal Bahar Sabery, Chattogram city unit president Jasmin Sultana Paru, general secretary Ajoy Mitra Shanku, joint secretary Tauhidul Islam and Chattogram south district president Abdul Mannan.
They argued that WASA should hold public hearing on the tariff hike because other service providers including the gas and electricity authority take opinions from experts and officials of different organisations.
