Drowning in water

Wednesday, 12 June 2019

There have been several cases of death by drowning during the Eid-ul-Fitr vacation.
Tanbir (8) went to the swimming pool of Vinnyajagat, an amusement park in Rangpur, on June 08. He died there. The authorities said the child drowned in the swimming pool which is for adult people and is much deeper for children.
Rifat Hossain (21), a student of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), was trying to cross Jamuna river in Naogaon district with his cousin on June 06. While the cousin, younger in age, crossed the river, he became very tired and failed to cross the river. He went missing.
People from outside may think that everyone in this riverine country knows how to swim. In reality, many do not know swimming and still they dare go to water without taking protective measures--they go without any guide/assistant, or without any lifejacket.
Even with the skill of how to swim, one may be in danger. The RUET student knew swimming, but he could not keep up his stamina to cross the river from the south end to the north end.
There should be more awareness in society. Everyone needs to learn swimming and those who know swimming should know about their stamina, and risks involved in the water. Human life is more precious than anything.
