Newly -elected DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur has expressed solidarity with the students who went on hunger strike demanding fresh DUCSU polls, report agencies.
"The students of Dhaka University protested against injustice. I morally supported them," he said on Thursday after visiting the students who continued their hunger strike for the third straight day at the entrance of Ruqayyah Hall.
"I have an organisation. They worked with me for a long time and spent time and energy. The general students worked for me. I spoke to them and was trying to understand what they were asking for," he said.
"If they want me to fight for them as the VP, I will do it. If they do not want, I will not take over my charge."
Nur, also the leader of Bangladesh Council to Protect General Students' Rights, demanded the resignation of Ruqayyah Hall Provost Zinnat Huda.
"She threatened us. She does not have any right to retain her post. She must step down as she has been accused of irregularities."
The VP vowed to continue protests against 'irregularities and rigging' in the election.
Meanwhile, Dhaka University's Ruqayyah Hall Provost Prof Zeenat Huda on Thursday said she has no authority to meet students' demand for reelection to the hall union.
She came up with the remark at a press conference at the DU Teachers' Club.
Students of the dormitory have been demanding reelection to their hall union and resignation of the hall provost for her 'failure' to hold a fair election on March 11.
They were also demanding withdrawal of a case filed against inmates of the dormitory.
About the demand to withdraw the case, Zeenat Huda said the case was not filed on behalf of the hall administration. "However, if students come to me with their demand, I'll discuss it with them."
She also said blaming her for alleged irregularities in the hall union election is not right.
