Easing traffic congestion for Eid revellers

Wednesday, 13 June 2018

With just a few days left for Eid ul-fitr, most people are preparing to embark on the journey from cities to their village homes in different parts of the country. They are, however, dreading the traffic congestion on the roads, which has become a mainstay over the past few years. The congestion is mostly caused by drivers of passenger buses, trucks, microbuses and others who violate traffic rules. Speeding and other illegal practices by drivers also lead to accidents. Last year, at least 311 people had died and 862 were injured in different road accidents during the Eid vacation. Other reasons behind traffic congestions on the highways are failure of traffic law enforcers to control the situation, dilapidated condition of roads and plying of relatively slower vehicles alongside fast ones. Under these circumstances, I urge the government to come forward with pragmatic and substantive solutions to address this nagging problem.
