Excellent Lotkon yield likely in Rangpur

RANGPUR, June 11: Lotkon (Burmese grape) trees in different areas under Rangpur division have been full of fruits, predicting an excellent yield of the fruit during the current season.
This variety of fruit is being cultivated both in orchards and homesteads of the region, sources said.
The farmers have engaged their optimum efforts in taking care of the lotkon trees in the orchards as well as homesteads. Its harvest has already begun across the region and it is expected to get further momentum during next one or two weeks.
Rabiul Islam, a lotkon grower of Mahiganj area in Rangpur city told The Financial Express that there are 100 lotkon trees in his orchard. He is optimistic about a good output of it this year. He expressed the hope that the price of the fruit may rise this season than that of the previous years.
A number of growers told this correspondent that earlier they had to struggle a lot to maintain their family by cultivating paddy only. But cultivation of different varieties of fruits including lotkon has brought significant changes in their life as its farming has proven more lucrative than that of paddy and some other crops, they added.
They laid emphasis on better marketing facilities to ensure fair price of their produces.
According to growers lotkon saplings require a little space to grow up. Two lotkon saplings need at least eight feet of space for proper growth.
Around 200 saplings can be planted on 45-50 decimals of land and some 110 to 120 maunds of fruit can be harvested each year, growers added.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources said owing to ample production with satisfactory market price, the peasants have been expanding farming of different fruits including lotkon every year in the region, sources added.
