JOYPURHAT, Nov 25: Farmers of the district are now cultivating olive on a large scale.
Local DAE office sources said olive cultivation is increasing in Akkelpur, Pachbibi, Kalia, Khetlal and Sadar upazilas of the district. A good number of orchard and homestead barren lands have been brought under olive cultivation as they are getting a positive result from it. The locally produced fruit is being sent to different districts across the country.
Farmer Abul Hossain of Panchbibi upazila said olive farming is profitable. Growers can make a handsome profit from it.
Farmer Alamgir Hossain said he grows vegetable on his land. But he is now thinking to grow olive on more land.
The fruits are being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 50 per kg in the retail market while Tk 25 to Tk 35 in the wholesale market.
The DAE officials said if more farmers show their interest in farming the fruit it would be possible to export to abroad.
