Int'l agencies seek $ 921m in aid to help Rohingya

International humanitarian agencies are likely to seek $ 921 million under their joint response plan (JRP) from the world community for supporting the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
Last year the amount was $ 950.8 million.
"This year the amount is slightly reduced as the infrastructure cost is lower than the previous year," chairman of RRRC Abdul Kalam told the FE on Friday.
The figure of the JRP was not yet finalised but it would be around $ 921 million, he said.
Of the amount, the largest portion of $ 250 million would be allocated for food, he added.
Last year the Inter Sector Coordination Group (ISCG), the platform of international donor agencies, sought $ 951 million under the JRP through a conference in Geneva.
Until December last around 80 per cent of the required fund for 2018 was received.
In November 2018, Bangladesh and Myanmar attempted to repatriate thousands of Rohingya refugees as part of a deal they had signed earlier.
But they were eventually forced to postpone their plans as none of the Rohingya listed for repatriation agreed to go back, fearing fresh persecution at home.
More than 720,000 Rohingya fled Myanmar as a result of a brutal military crackdown in August 2017, taking shelter in crowded camps in Bangladesh and bringing with them harrowing tales of rape, murder and arson. Last year, the United Nations' Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar classified the atrocities perpetrated by the country's military as "genocide".
