RANGPUR, Oct 09: Sufferings of around 25,000 people at different villages under Pirganj upazila in Thakurgaon district have mounted on account of absence of a concrete bridge over the Tangon river in Atai Ghat area of Jabarhat union in the upazila.
The local people of the villages are being compelled to cross a bamboo-made bridge over the river to come to the upazila headquarter amid serious risk, sources said.
The school going children face great difficulties in reaching their institutions through the bamboo bridge. Most of them do not go to school in the rainy season for fear of accidents on the bridge, locals alleged.
"The bridge becomes risky in the monsoon. The bamboos get slippery and we cannot cross it easily. Sometimes the bamboos get damaged, yet we have to cross the bridge every day", said Matin Mia, a local resident.
Traders and farmers are suffering immensely due to communication problem as they need to carry their products to upazila markets for sale.
Ataur (50), a farmer of Jabarhat village in the upazila said they are often deprived of fair prices of their produce which they cannot carry easily to the upazila headquarters owing to lack of a concrete bridge.
Aggrieved local people have expressed their disappointment saying that successive local government authorities could not erect a bridge over the river though they made pledges for it many times.
Whenever election comes closer candidates woo voters assuring them of constructing a bridge over the river but once it is over the elected representative becomes oblivious to the commitment, they further said.
Locals have made an appeal to the government to take necessary steps to build a permanent bridge over the river Tangon to ensure smooth journey as well as business of local people.
