Protecting Dhanmodi lake trees

Thousands of people visit Dhaka's Dhanmondi lake area everyday for recreation and jogging. It has also become an attractive spot for cultural programmes including celebration of Pahela Baishakh. The green atmosphere around the lake has made it a unique place in this crowded city. But trees that are a source of oxygen for the city dwellers, are not being taken care of properly.
We often see the trees of the lake area fallen down on the ground or on the water body following a storm, or even during normal time. Mostafizur Rahman (54), director of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), died on May 11, 2018, when he was walking in the morning as one tree fell on him.
A huge banyan tree fell down near Rabindra Sarobar point a few years back, and the spot still looks barren. The main reason why trees fall down is that there is not enough soil at the roots of the trees. So, many trees are in vulnerable condition. We urge the authorities concerned to take immediate steps so that the trees are protected, and saplings are planted wherever necessary, around the lake area. The lake area looks serene on any sunny day, giving a lot of relief to the visitors and passersby. Trees are common resources of mankind and we must take steps to save whatever trees we have in Dhaka, and thus protect natural environment.
