RHD to widen Moynamati-Dharkhar road under Indian LoC-III

The Roads and Highways Department (RHD) will widen the Moynamati-Brahmanbaria (Dharkhar) road into 4-lane one with the support of Indian Line of Credit (LoC) to improve the cross-border connectivity.
The RHD has taken a project to reconstruct the two-lane 54 kilometres road at a cost of US$ 887 million, officials at the RHD said. The road will have separate lanes on both sides for slow-moving vehicles.
"We have sent a preliminary development project proposal (PDPP) to the Planning Commission for approval. Besides, we have requested the Economic Relations Division (ERD) for confirming the fund from the LoC," said a senior official at the ERD.
The RHD would go for developing the road after getting confirmation of the fund.
The road will not only connect Bangladesh with neighbouring India, it will also connect the Asian Highway and BIMSTEC road corridor, officials said. It will connect Ashuganj port-Akhaura land port 4-lane road and facilitate connectivity between the Chittagong port and neighbouring India.
The Indian government has already confirmed US$ 4.50 billion worth of LoC-III for Bangladesh under which Dhaka could take different development projects.
An official at the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges said Bangladesh has a plan to go to China's Kunming through establishing smooth road connectivity.
The proposed 4-lane road will also connect the Asian Highways AH1 and AH2, he added.
Under the proposed road-widening project, 14 bridges, one 1.03km flyover, two underpasses, and 12 foot-over bridges would be built.
"We have a plan to complete the project by June 2022," the RHD official said.
