TIB praises land ministry's move to collect info on staffers' wealth

Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) has welcomed the move taken by the land ministry to collect information on wealth of its class III and IV employees.
Terming the move a positive initiative for ensuring transparency and accountability, the anti-graft watchdog also lauded the land minister for taking such steps, said a press release on Thursday.
The land ministry earlier asked its lower-grade employees to submit their wealth statements.
The initiative would not yield any 'effective' outcome if the higher-grade officials of the land ministry do not submit their wealth statements, the release added.
TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said, "The move is supporting the announcement made by the prime minister about taking zero tolerance against corruption."
"It's good initiative, but at the same time, it is the land minister's responsibility to establish good governance in his ministry."
Dr Iftekhar added: "We are yet to be fully satisfied with the move as 1st and 2nd grade officers are still out of the initiative."
The government should make it mandatory for public servants to submit their wealth statements in a bid to ensure transparency and accountability, he said.
