The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) during a drive on Monday fined 10 business establishments Tk 0.28 million for using foreign languages instead of Bangla in their signboards.

A DNCC team, led by its executive magistrate, conducted the drive in the city's Banani's Road-11, a statement said.

The 10 businesses include Little Angels, BFC, Ginza, Fit Elegance, Angella, Moons, Anjara, Real Thai and Leatherx.

The DNCC team also scrapped illegal LED signboards of BFC, Real Thai and Leatherex.

According to a directive of the High Court, all organisations, excluding embassies and foreign agencies, must use Bangla inscribed signboards.

The Local Government Division set the DNCC the task of implementing the directive in its service area.

Later the DNCC through a circular published in different national dailies last year requested all the organisations to use Bangla in their signboards, billboards, and banners completely avoiding foreign languages.

The city corporation authorities also made the announcement through loudspeaker, articles in newspapers, advertisements and Facebook posts.

The DNCC punished the businesses for violating the High Court order and not abiding by the circular, which are an infringement of the Local Government (City Corporation) Act 2009, the statement said.

DNCC public relations officer ASM Mamun was present during the drive among others.

The authorities will continue such drives in the coming days, said DNCC sources.
