Investors adopt 'wait-and-see' stance

Most of the major sectors declined on Sunday and the Dhaka bourse Sunday closed marginally lower.

On the day, investors' participation on Dhaka bourse declined significantly and the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) featured a turnover below Tk 4.0 billion.

According to International Leasing Securities, the market opened with an upward trend, but the selling pressure from the profit booking investors brought the index downward within half an hour.

"Following the recent market trend, shaky investors opted for liquidating their position from bank, engineering and food sectors while some cautious investors adopted 'wait-and-see' stance," said the International Leasing Securities.

The market started the day's session with a positive note and the DSE broad index DSEX continued for fifteen minutes.

Later, the DSEX displayed a sharp fall till the mid-session. During the rest of the session, the market displayed flat movement.

At the end of the session, the DSEX closed at 6,213.08 points with a loss of 0.27 per cent or 16.92 points.

The shariah-based index DSES and blue chip index DS30 declined marginally.

Of 332 issues traded, 114 advanced, 176 declined and 42 were unchanged on the premier bourse DSE.

The turnover stood at above Tk 3.38 billion which was 16 per cent less than the turnover of the previous session.

Of the major sectors, only the telecommunication sector advanced 0.2 per cent.

Of the declining sectors, bank declined 0.5 per cent, engineering 0.5 per cent, financial institutions 0.1 per cent, fuel & power 0.1 per cent, pharmaceuticals & chemicals 0.2 per cent and textile 0.3 per cent.

Investors' participation was concentrated mostly on banking sector which grabbed 14.90 per cent of the market turnover followed by engineering 12.30 per cent, textile 12 per cent and pharmaceuticals & chemicals 9.6 per cent.

United Power Generation and Distribution Company was the number one turnover leader followed by Paramount Textile Tk 122 million and Pharma Aids Tk 98 million.
