Sonali Bank recovers Tk 21.8m stuck in Iraq bank

The state-run Sonali Bank Limited has recovered US$ 0.257 million (Tk 21.80 million) stuck in a government bank in the war-torn Iraq for nearly 30 years since the US-UK invasion of the country, says a press release.

Sonali Bank Limited Chairman Md Ashraful Moqbul and Iraq's largest bank Rafidain's Chairman Dr Khawlah Talib Jabbar Alassady signed an agreement to settle the issue on behalf of their respective organisations at the bank's Baghdad headquarters on Sunday.

Sonali Bank CEO and Managing Director Md Obayed Ullah Al Masud, Foreign Remittance Management Division Deputy General Manager Md Abdul Wahab were present on the occasion.

After relentless efforts by Bangladesh Ambassador to Iraq Abu Maksud Md Farhad, the Sonali Bank could recover the money from the volatile country.

The Sonali Bank delegation led by its Chairman Md Ashraful Moqbul also signed an agreement with the authority of Rafidain bank, enabling the Bangladeshi workers in Iraq to send foreign remittance through banking channels to boost the country's economy.

Earlier, the delegation met the deputy governor of Iraq's central bank and discussed bilateral issues, the release added.
