China wants to boost trade: Envoy

SYLHET, Dec 06: Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh Zang Zhuo has said his country want to be a more active partner in Bangladesh's economic development.

"We also need to deepen the people to people contact through cultural exchange," he observed.

The ambassador said things will be more dynamic in near future as both sides are working on policy level activities in various fields.

He was addressing as the chief guest at an exchange of views meeting, organised by the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI) on Thursday.

SCCI President Khondaker Shipar Ahmed chaired the meeting held at the Chamber building.

The ambassador also said both Bangladesh and China have been working for increasing bilateral trade since the Chinese president paid a visit to Bangladesh in 2016.

The Chinese government had been giving maximum tax benefits for Bangladeshi businesses, he said, adding yet there are ample scopes to increase assistance in IT and other sectors.

"Free trade region would help us both," the envoy further said.

There are growing interests among the Chinese businesses too for larger investment in Bangladesh, he mentioned, noting already many technical experts are running industrial units here.

Referring to the Shajalal Fertiliser Company, set up with Chinese technical assistance, the envoy said it is running even better than those in China.

He visited the factory on the day.

He also said due to the increasing cooperation in the education sector, the number of Bangladeshi students to the Chinese institutions had been on rise as about 4,400 Bangladeshi students go there every year.

The embassy's Second Secretary Yang Chungjing and other officials accompanied him.

Besides, Commissioner of Customs, Excise & VAT, Sylhet, Golam Mohammad Munir, Bangladesh Bank's General Manager Jibon Krishna Roy, Baraka Group's Managing Director Fahim Ahmed Chwodhury, North East University's Associate Professor Tanvir Ahmed Chowdhury, Manager of Alim Industries Shahidul Islam, Computer Council's centre-in-charge Modhusudan Chanda, Sylhet Sarkari Mohila College's Principal Hayatul Islam Akunji, former president of Sylhet Press Club Iqbal Siddiquee, SCCI Vice Presidents Mashud Ahmed Chwodhury and Emdad Hossain and SCCI directors Nurul Islam and Mushfiq Jaigirder were also present and spoke.
