Chittagong Port sets record in container handling

CHITTAGONG, Mar 17 (BSS): Country's prime seaport in Chittagong has set the highest record in container handling as it handled one twenty equivalent unit (TEU) of container in less than a minute.

Port sources said a mother vessel that anchored at the berth no. 13 of the port on March 5 discharged 3,654 TEUs of containers within 72 hours and later the vessel left the Chittagong port with 1,875 TEUS of containers on March 8.

Another mother vessel 'MCC Ningbo' anchored at the berth no. 14 on March 5 last. It delivered 1,779 imported containers and later the ship also left Chittagong port for Singapore with 1,875 TEUs of export containers on March 8, the source added.

Berth operator sources said it was possible to handle 3,654 TEUs of import and export cargoes in 72 hours by using three cranes of the vessels that set a new record in container handling.

Chief Executive Officer of the berth operator Messers Bashir Ahmed, Mohammad Salahuddin told the news agency that they handled more than 52 TEUs of containers every hour which is the highest container handling so far in the port's history.
