SYLHET, Dec 18: After more than eight months, coal import from Indian state of Meghalaya resumed through Tamabil Land Customs Station on Thursday.

Coal import also resumed through other LC stations in the region, sources said, adding that resumption of coal imports came as a relief to importers and traders as well as labourers. Over 50,000 labourers engage in loading and unloading on the borders.

Coal import remained suspended as the miners and the authorities concerned stopped extracting coal in line with a court order, border sources said, adding that coal mining in Meghalaya had been in legal trouble for years on environmental grounds.

However, coal import started again after the court recently cleared the way for its import temporarily, officials informed. About 90 truckloads of the item entered Bangladesh through Tamabil LC station on Thursday afternoon.
