Ensuring business sustainability

FE Report | August 27, 2019 00:00:00

Speakers at a dialogue called for creating awareness about using green technology, reducing duty on environment-friendly equipment, and lowering interest rate to ensure sustainability of businesses.

They also emphasised rainwater harvesting, using renewable energy sources, reducing misuse of energy, and adopting modern waste management system in this regard.

They made the recommendations at a dialogue on 'Environmental Sustain-ability and Certification', organised by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) at its office on Sunday, a statement said.

The DCCI President Osama Taseer chaired the dialogue, where its Senior Vice President Waqar Ahmad Choudhury and Vice President Imran Ahmed were present, among others.

An expert on sustainable infrastructure and CEO of the EnergySolve International Ltd Mahendra Jayalath presented the keynote paper in the programme.

Mr Jayalath opined that sustainable development is the driving force behind development in the modern age.

Contamination of water, soil and air, chemical pollution, deforestation, and waste management are some of the concerns related with sustainable environment, he also said.

"We need to focus on green building for sustainable environment, as it will help us to combat climate change-related problems," he added.

Osama Taseer said the DCCI has long been working with the policy-makers and development partners to promote environmental sustainability through some remarkable initiatives.

He mentioned various initiatives of the DCCI in this regard, like - 'Eco-friendly Jute Pulp Paper Project' and 'Resource Efficient Cleaner Production Project' in metal industry.

Sustainability is one of the most discussed environmental and climate change-related issues, he also said.

There are 90 green factories in Bangladesh, certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), he added.

The DCCI president also underscored the need for ensuring coordination between public and private sectors to ensure a 'comprehensive greening' of the country's construction sector.

About 50 participants from different organisations took part in the dialogue.
