Dhaka requested Athens to recruit workers from Bangladesh under a bilateral agreement to get mutual benefits.

Visiting secretary of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment (EWOE) ministry Dr Nomita Halder made the request at a meeting with Greek Social Security and Solidarity ministry secretary general Andreas Megaludis in Athens, according to a press release issued on Saturday.

Nomita Halder said that the Greek authorities could recruit Bangladeshi workers for two years instead of six months under the bilateral agreement.

Presently, agricultural sectors recruit seasonal workers for six months in Greece under an arrangement which does not bring benefits for Bangladeshis.

During the meeting, Mr Andreas said that the Greek government has been assisting Bangladeshi workers in Greece.

He said that documented Bangladeshi workers could earn equal wage and are entitled to get other benefits like the Greek citizens.

A good number of Bangladeshi workers are currently employed in the agriculture, garments and restaurants of Greece, officials said.

Ms Halder said Bangladesh is trying to increase export of skilled workers for overseas jobs.

Workers are being imparted training in different trades including garments, care giving, housekeeping and language skill at 70 technical training centers, she mentioned.

The Greek secretary general showed his interest about development of Bangladesh and assured that the European country would consider recruiting more Bangladeshi workers in coming days.

There are huge demands of foreign workers in tourism, restaurant, garment, agriculture, home service, and housekeeping sectors in Greece, the press release said.

"If Greece recruits Bangladeshi workers, both the countries will be benefitted in different ways," said the expatriates' welfare secretary.
