DWASA to supply 500m litres Meghna River water daily

In order to increase dependency on surface water in place of ground water, Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (DWASA) will construct a water treatment plant to supply 500 million litres water daily to the capital using water from Meghna River.

The Tk 31.05 billion treatment plant will be constructed at Gandhrabpur, says a statement.

The plant is being built under the Dhaka Environmentally Sustainable Water Supply Project (DESWSP), funded by ADB, AFD and European Investment Bank.

The plant, to be constructed on Design Build Operate basis, will be completed by 2021.

Dhaka WASA signed a Design Build Operate (DBO) contract with SUEZ & VEOLIA of France in this regard at a hotel in the capital recently.

Engineer Taqsem A Khan, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dhaka WASA, and Pierre-Yves Pouliqen of Gandhrabpur Water Treatment SNC inked the agreement on behalf of their respective side.

Iqramul Haque , Additional Secretary of Local Government Division of the Ministry of LGRD and Cooperatives, was present as the guest of honour at the agreement signing ceremony, chaired by Engineer Taqsem A Khan.

Ambassador of France to Bangladesh Marie-Annick Bourdin and Country Director of Asian Development Bank (ADB) Manmohan Parkash were present as the special guests.
