CHATTOGRAM, Dec 24: The keel-laying ceremony of five general cargo vessels, being built by FMC Dockyard Limited, was held in Boalkhali upazila of the district on Monday.

FMC Dockyard Ltd. Chairman Mohammad Yasin Chowdhury presided over the function at its premises. The vessels, 78.3 meters in length and 3,200 dead weight tonnage (DWT) capacity each, will be eco-friendly.

Speaking on the occasion, Yasin Chowdhury said the keel forms the backbone of a ship.

Laying down the keel is the formal beginning of a ship's construction and the FMC is excited to start construction process of five vessels at the same time, he said.

He said they are going to organise another keel-laying ceremony shortly for building 10 other vessels of different types including some hi-tech ones which will have a significant impact on developing a ship-building cluster in this region.

The ship-building activities will considerably contribute to the growth of the country's economy, he added.

The five under-construction vessels will be delivered to their buyer Muhuri Shipping Ltd. in the second quarter of 2020.

The vessels will be built in accordance with regulations of Bangladesh Maritime industry under supervision of the classification society RINA of Italy.
