Ministry asks CCC to cancel recruitment process

CHATTOGRAM, June 06: Uncertainty looms large over the postponement of a drive to recruit manpower in the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC).

The local government ministry in a letter on Monday asked the CCC to cancel the ongoing process of appointment to 41 vacant posts.

The latest move came seven days after receiving thousands of applications from job seekers.

On May 10, the CCC through advertisements invited applications to fill the vacancies under 15 categories with different grades and scales.

The CCC office received more than 0.1 million applications until May 29, the last date for submissions.

The posts included tax collector, inspector, office assistant, office support (staff), security staff, ayah, messenger and the like.

The Local Government Department (LGD) wrote to the CCC chief executive officer (CEO) to shelve the recruitment process.

It said the city corporation issued the job circular without the ministry's prior permission.

Even the ministry has not issued any such release order, it added.

In its letter, the LGD also sought an explanation from the CCC CEO within seven days.

According to CCC officials, they started the process of filling the vacant posts after receiving necessary instructions from the ministry.

CCC Secretary Md Abul Hossain confirmed the receipt of the letter.

He said they issued a circular for appointment to the vacant posts as per the ministry's instruction, but it now says otherwise.

"The CCC must obtain an order for recruitment in the vacant posts...," he quoted the letter of the LGD.

In another letter, the LGD said 3,180 posts were created for the CCC, but the regulations regarding appointment and promotion are not formulated yet.

Asked if the applications will now be cancelled or postponed, Mr Hossain said they will write to the ministry in this regard.

The ambiguity will be over soon, he hoped.

A letter signed by Md Mahmudul Alam, deputy secretary of the LGD, on February 5 urged the CCC to take urgent steps to fill the posts, he said.

The CCC has currently 9,334 staff members, including temporary workers.

As many as 400 posts are now lying vacant.
