Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has urged Canada to invest in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) of Bangladesh for mutual benefits of the two countries.
The minister made the call as Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka Benoit Préfontaine met him at his secretariat office on Wednesday.
Bangladeshi export to Canada is increasing day by day and investors from Canada will be profitable if they invest in Bangladesh, said the minister.
One hundred SEZs are now being set up in the country at the initiative of the prime minister and Canada can invest in these zones, Tofail told reporter after the view exchange meeting with the Canadian envoy.
He said Canada is a large export market and business partner of Bangladesh. Bangladesh's products enjoy quota-free facility to the Canadian market.
Bangladesh's export to Canada now stands at US$1.07 billion while Canada's export to Bangladesh totals about $598 million, he added.
The minister said the investment policy of Bangladesh is business-friendly and the government would provide all sorts of necessary supports to Canada.
The investors can take back profits anytime if they want, and their investment will remain totally protected, he added.
Tofail said the government will take initiatives to increase trade volume with Canada where Bangladeshi products have a huge demand.
Canadian envoy Benoit Préfontaine said his country has a friendly relation with Bangladesh, a trade partner of Canada.
Canada has been providing assistance to different development sectors of Bangladesh, he said.
Readymade garments of Bangladesh are popular in Canada, he said.
The imports from Bangladesh would also be increased further in the future, he added.
The Canadian envoy also lauded the development of Bangladesh. The investment climate in Bangladesh is excellent and facilities are attractive, he added.
He also said Bangladesh has set a good example by providing shelter to displaced Rohingyas.
