Five students die as security forces open fire in Sudan

July 30, 2019 00:00:00

CAIRO, July 29 (AP): Sudanese activists say security forces have violently dispersed student protests in a western province, killing at least five people.

The Sudanese Doctors' Central Committee, part of the Sudanese Professionals' Association, says security forces fired live ammunition Monday against high school students in the city of Obeid in the North Kordofan province. It says several other people were wounded, some critically.

The SPA posted a video showing hundreds of students protesting in Obeid, with gunshots echoing in the background.

Sudan has been rocked by mass anti-government protests since December. The protesters continued to hold demonstrations after the military overthrew President Omar al-Bashir in April, demanding a speedy transition to civilian rule.

The military is currently negotiating a power-sharing agreement with the protest coalition.
