Guterres warns against rising anti-Muslim hatred

CAIRO, Apr 02: UN chief Antonio Guterres warned on Tuesday against growing hatred of Muslims, less than a month after a deadly attack on mosques in New Zealand killed at least 50 people. His remarks came during a speech at Egypt's Al-Azhar, the Sunni Muslim world's foremost religious institution, where he met Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb. — AFP

SDF tracks Syria jihadists after ‘caliphate’ falls

BEIRUT, Apr 02: A US-backed force said Tuesday it was chasing Islamic State group jihadists in eastern Syria, as coalition warplanes pound the militants more than a week after their "caliphate" was declared defeated. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), supported by warplanes of a US-led coalition, dislodged IS fighters from their last redoubt in the village of Baghouz near the Iraqi border on March 23, following a months-long offensive. — AFP

23 China children fall sick in suspected poisoning

BEIJING, Apr 02: Authorities in eastern China say 23 kindergarteners were sickened in a suspected act of deliberate poisoning by their teacher. Police in the city of Jiaozuo said Tuesday that a teacher identified by the surname Wang is believed to have adulterated the children's food with sodium nitrite and has been arrested. Overexposure to sodium nitrite can be toxic and possibly fatal. Police said they were still looking for a motive in last week's incident. — AP

Whatsapp targets fake messages ahead of India polls

NEW DELHI, Apr 02: WhatsApp launched a hotline on Tuesday allowing Indians to flag rumours circulating ahead of the upcoming election, a major concern in a country where fake news has fuelled violence. It comes a day after WhatsApp's parent company Facebook removed hundreds of pages promoting India's ruling and opposition parties for violating rules around spam and "coordinated inauthentic behaviour" online. — AFP

Argentine president to seek re-election

BUENOS AIRES, Apr 02: Argentine President Mauricio Macri will seek re-election in the presidential election in October, said Rogelio Frigerio, minister of the interior, public works and housing on Monday. "Presidential candidate of the Cambiemos is President Mauricio Macri, who is going to go for re-election," Frigerio said during a press conference. Cambiemos is an Argentine center-right political coalition created in 2015. — Xinhua

Four hurt in Russian military academy blast

SAINT PETERSBURG, Apr 02: Four people were injured in a blast at a military academy in Russia's second city of Saint Petersburg, news agencies reported citing emergency services. "As a result of an explosion, four cadets were injured according to preliminary information," an emergency services official told RIA Novosti state news agency after the blast. — AFP
