Baby born to brain-dead mom in Czech Republic

PRAGUE, Sept 02: A healthy baby was born in the Czech Republic to a mother who had been brain-dead for nearly four months, doctors said on Monday. The baby girl was born by cesarean section in the 34th week of pregnancy last month, 117 days after her mother was declared brain dead, doctors at University Hospital in the second Czech city of Brno told a press conference. The girl, weighing 2.13 kilos, is "one of the heaviest and most mature babies born to a brain-dead mother. — AFP

PNG cancels Australia migrant camp contract

PORT MORESBY, Sept 02: Papua New Guinea on Monday took a significant step toward shutting down island refugee camps that have become synonymous with Australia's much-condemned immigration policies. The Ministry for Immigration and Border Security announced it was ending a contract with an Australian-backed firm running the camps on Manus Island. The ministry described the end of Paladin Holdings' contact to provide security and other services as "the most significant milestone to date in ending regional processing in Manus Province." — AFP

Bolsonaro to undergo surgery for fourth time

SAO PAULO, Sept 02: Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro will undergo surgery to correct an incisional hernia, his fourth operation since he was stabbed nearly a year ago during his presidential campaign, his office said Sunday. A statement from the president's office said the problem resulted from previous surgeries. Bolsonaro tweeted a photograph of himself flanked by his doctors in Sao Paulo. "Everything indicates I will 'enjoy' some 10 days vacation with them shortly," he said. — AFP

Sudan's PM rejects interference in ministers' selection

KHARTOUM, Sept 02: Sudan's Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok on Sunday reiterated rejection of any attempt to intervene in or influence his selection of ministers for the transitional cabinet. Hamdok made the remarks in a statement, criticizing what he termed as "quota-based lists" presented by the Freedom and Change Alliance. He stressed commitment to the set standards for selecting the government ministers to lead the country to safety. —Xinhua

Tunisian security chief, 3 extremists killed in shootout

TUNIS, Sept 02: A Tunisian national guard chief and three extremists were killed in a clash Monday on the first day of the country's presidential campaign, authorities said. National guard officers and army troops were tracking a radical group in the Kef mountains near the Algerian border when shooting broke out, killing the four, national guard spokesman Housameddine Jbabli told The Associated Press. The security operation is ongoing near the town of Hydra in the Kasserine region, he said. — AFP
