Hero’s welcome as Guaido returns to Venezuela

CARACAS, Mar 05: Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido received a hero's welcome from thousands of flag-waving supporters chanting "Yes, you can!" as he returned to Caracas on Monday, defying the threat of arrest from embattled President Nicolas Maduro's government. "We know the risks we face, that's never stopped us. The regime, the dictatorship must understand," a defiant Guaido, who has been recognized as acting president by more than 50 countries, told a delirious crowd. — AFP

Hillary will not run for president in 2020

WASHINGTON, Mar 05: Hillary Clinton says she won't run for president in 2020, but vows she's "not going anywhere." The former secretary of state, senator and first lady ruled out another campaign during an interview posted Monday by New York TV station News12. Clinton, who lost the 2016 presidential election to Donald Trump, says, "I'm going to keep on working and speaking and standing up for what I believe." — AP

BJP site down after reports of hack

NEW DELHI, Mar 05: The official website of India's governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is down after reports it was hacked. Party officials are yet to confirm the report, but screenshots of memes apparently spotted on the site are being widely shared on social media. One of them features a picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel with a caption littered with Hindi swear words. A message on the website says it is down for maintenance. — BBC

Volvo unveils driverless electric bus in S’pore

SINGAPORE CITY, Mar 05: Volvo and a Singapore university unveiled a driverless electric bus on Tuesday that will soon undergo tests in the city-state, the latest move towards rolling out autonomous vehicles for public transport. High-tech Singapore has become a testbed for self-driving technology and the world's first driverless taxis went into operation in a limited public trial in the country in 2016. — AFP

Philippine defence chief calls for US pact review

MANILA, Mar 05: The decades-old defence treaty between the United States and the Philippines needs to be revamped, or risks dragging Manila into a war with China, the Filipino defence chief said on Tuesday. Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana made the comments four days after US Secretary Mike Pompeo said Washington would intervene in case of an armed attack on Philippine forces or vessels in the disputed South China Sea. — AFP

LONDON, Mar 05: Exposure to social media marketing of unhealthy food could lead to an immediate increase in children's intake of unhealthy food with more calories, a new study published in Pediatrics on Monday suggested. With an aim to examine the impact of social media marketing of snack foods on children's snack intake, researchers of the University of Liverpool in Britain designed a control experiment which consisted of 176 participants aged nine to 11. — Xinhua

Macron’s plea for Europe gets backing

PARIS, Mar 05: French President Emmanuel Macron's plea in the publications of 28 nations for a stronger European Union has gained support from neighbouring Belgium and Finland. Cave of relics found under Mayan ruins

MEXICO CITY, Mar 05: Archaeologists have discovered a cave filled with hundreds of artifacts beneath the ruins of the Mayan city of Chichen Itza in Mexico, the lead researcher on the project said Monday, calling the find "incredible." The massive cave is a "scientific treasure," Mexican archaeologist Guillermo de Anda told a news conference. — AFP

Burundi shutters UN rights office

GENEVA, Mar 05: Burundi has closed a UN human rights office that has been operating in the country since 1995, UN rights chief Michelle Bachelet said Tuesday, vowing that the UN would continue monitoring violations there. "It is with deep regret that we have had to close our office in Burundi after a 23-year presence in the country," Bachelet said in a statement. — AFP
