Putin, Erdogan discuss Libya, Syria over phone

MOSCOW, July 07: Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed issues relating to Libya and Syria in a phone conversation on Saturday. The leaders voiced mutual concerns over the escalation of the situation in Libya and stressed the "urgent need" for a ceasefire and a resumption of the negotiation process, said a Kremlin statement. Putin and Erdogan also underlined the importance of strengthening political and diplomatic efforts on a Syrian settlement, including within consultations held in the Kazakh capital of Nur-Sultan with Russia, Turkey and Iran as mediators. — Xinhua

Indonesia's famed disaster spokesman dies

JAKARTA, July 07: Indonesia's disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho - who shot to international fame for keeping up a 24/7 schedule while battling terminal cancer - has died at the age of 49. Affectionately known as Pak Topo (Mr Topo), Nugroho was the face of government efforts to get word out on the latest developments in a string of natural disasters, including a quake-tsunami that killed thousands on Sulawesi island in 2018. — AFP

Five discovered killed in St Louis apartment

ST LOUIS, July 07: Police in St. Louis say five people have been discovered slain in an apartment building. St. Louis County Police confirmed Saturday afternoon in a news conference posted to the department's Twitter page that all five people killed were adults. Police would not give the names, ages or genders of the five people killed, nor disclose how they believed they had been killed. Police Chief Jon Belmar said only that investigators were certain they were victims of homicide. — AP

Iraqi forces begin operation against IS along border

BAGHDAD, July 07: Iraq's security and paramilitary forces have begun a military operation along the border with Syria aiming to clear the area of Islamic State group militants. The Iraqi military said the operation that began at sunrise Sunday is being carried out by Iraqi troops and members of the Popular Mobilization Forces that largely consist of Iran-backed militias. Although Iraq declared victory against IS in July 2017, the extremists have turned into an insurgency and have carried out deadly attacks in the country. — AP

Italy boat dispute migrants disembark on Lampedusa

ROME, July 07: Migrants on a rescue boat that docked in the Italian island of Lampedusa against an explicit ban have disembarked after the vessel was impounded. Humanitarian group Mediterranea Saving Humans said in a tweet late on Saturday that over 40 migrants on board were "finally allowed to disembark to receive assistance." — AP
