Tunisia Islamist party rebrands for election

TUNIS, Sept 08: Chastened by its early experiences of holding power in post-revolution Tunisia, Islamist-inspired party Ennahdha has moderated its image and selected lawyer Abdelfattah Mourou as its candidate for next Sunday's presidential election. Hesitant at first, Ennahdha only entered its first ever presidential contest after polling was brought forward following the July death of incumbent president Beji Caid Essebsi. — AFP

Dorian makes landfall in Canada

OTTAWA, Sept 08: Storm Dorian has made landfall in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia as a post-tropical cyclone. The powerful storm hit Halifax on Saturday with winds of 100mph (160km/h), toppling trees and cutting power to more than 450,000 homes. Canada's Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said the military would be deployed to help recovery efforts. It comes days after Dorian devastated the Bahamas. The death toll there is 43 but is expected to increase further. — BBC

Mugabe's body may return home next week

HARARE, Sept 08: Robert Mugabe's nephew said Sunday that a delegation was expected to leave Zimbabwe on Monday to collect the hero-turned-despot's body from Singapore where he died two days ago. Mugabe, a guerilla leader who swept to power after Zimbabwe's independence from Britain and ruled for 37 years, died on Friday, aged 95. His health took a hit after he was ousted by the military in November 2017, ending his increasingly tyrannical rule. — AFP

Japan ex-empress undergoes cancer surgery

TOKYO, Sept 08: Japan's former empress Michiko underwent surgery on Sunday after the 84-year-old was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, the Imperial Household Agency said. Michiko's husband Akihito formally stepped down as emperor in April, the first abdication for 200 years in the world's oldest monarchy. Her operation began Sunday morning "as scheduled" at the University of Tokyo Hospital, the agency official said. — AFP
