Iran installing advanced centrifuges: UN watchdog

VIENNA, Sept 09: The UN's nuclear watchdog confirmed Monday that Iran was installing advanced centrifuges as the troubled 2015 deal with world powers over Tehran's nuclear programme threatens to fall apart. In a statement the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that on September 7 it had "verified that the following centrifuges were either installed or being installed…: 22 IR-4, one IR-5, 30 IR-6 and three IR-6". — AFP

Kuwait's ruler in hospital, cancels Trump visit

DUBAI, Sept 09: Kuwait's 90-year-old ruling emir has cancelled a visit Thursday with President Donald Trump at the White House after being admitted to a U.S. hospital following an earlier health scare last month. Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah will undergo unspecified tests during his hospitalization, the state-run KUNA news agency reported late Sunday. It did not elaborate. It quoted Sheikh Ali Jarrah Al Sabah, the minister of the emir's diwan council, as saying Sheikh Sabah would reschedule his visit with Trump. — AP

Hezbollah downs Israeli drone

BEIRUT, Sept 09: The Iran-backed Hezbollah movement said Monday it had downed and seized an Israeli drone as it flew across the Lebanese border, a week after a flash confrontation between the arch-foes. Israel's army said a drone it was operating "fell" in Lebanon on Sunday. In what appeared to be a response, an air strike at "around midnight" killed 18 pro-Iranian fighters in eastern Syria, a monitor said. — AFP

Italy’s new govt faces confidence vote

ROME, Sept 09: Italy's new pro-Europe government under Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte faced a confidence vote in the lower house of parliament Monday, as protesters from the far-right rallied in Rome. The coalition of the anti-establishment Five Star Movement and centre-left Democratic Party was expected to easily win, and will then face another vote Tuesday in the upper house. Demonstrators from the far-right League and smaller Brothers of Italy party protested in front of parliament, with some performing right-arm fascist salutes while others held up banners reading "not in my name". — AFP

French FM rejects unworthy comments on First Lady

PARIS, Sept 09: French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on Sunday rejected "unworthy" and "unacceptable" comments by Brazilian official mocking French President's wife Brigitte Macron. "The way in which such a Brazilian official, minister in addition, treats Mrs. Macron is unworthy, unworthy for her, for France, but also for women, starting with the Brazilian women who themselves protest against this type of declaration," Le Drian said. —Xinhua

Patients die as traffic jams block ambulances

MANILA, Sept 09: Gridlock in Manila is costing lives as ambulances stuck in traffic face severe delays in the race against the clock to reach the city's hospitals, medics warn. Special lanes for emergency vehicles are not enforced, the infrastructure is outdated, and local drivers are often unwilling or unable to make way - a situation experts say is causing patients to die en route. — AFP
