Indian minister files defamation suit against woman

MUMBAI, Oct 15: Indian government minister M.J. Akbar filed a defamation suit against one of at least 10 women accusing him of sexual harassment on Monday, calling her allegations false and malicious. The lawsuit, a copy of which was reviewed by Reuters, names journalist Priya Ramani as the sole accused and says that she "intentionally put forward malicious, fabricated and salacious" allegations to harm his reputation. — Reuters

Pak PM’s party wins less seats than expected in vote

ISLAMABAD, Oct 15: Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan's party didn't win as many seats as it expected in special elections held for 35 seats that remained up for grabs after July's parliament elections. The party of ex-premier Nawaz Sharif won 11 seats in the national and provincial seats, out of 35 contested in Sunday's balloting. — AP

Harry, Meghan expecting first baby

LONDON, Oct 15: Queen Elizabeth's grandson Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle are expecting their first child, due in the spring of 2019, the couple's office Kensington Palace announced on Monday. "The Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that the Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the spring of 2019," their Kensington Palace residence said in a statement. The baby will be seventh-in-line to the British throne. British media said Meghan was believed to be about 12 weeks pregnant. — AFP

Anwar takes oath as lawmaker

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15: Malaysian Prime Minister-in-waiting Anwar Ibrahim said he felt "vindicated" after taking his oath as a lawmaker Monday, marking his return to active politics three years after he was imprisoned for sodomy in a charge that critics said was politically motivated. The swearing-in ceremony in parliament followed Anwar's landslide win in a by-election on Saturday. — AP

May under mounting pressure to rethink Brexit plan

LONDON, Oct 15: British Prime Minister Theresa May will face mounting pressure on Monday to rethink her plan for leaving the European Union after Brexit talks reached a stand-off at the weekend over the so-called Irish backstop. Less than six months before Britain leaves the bloc and days before May heads to Brussels for a summit on Wednesday when both sides hope to make progress, the Brexit talks were paused on Sunday. — Reuters
