Saudi Arabia intercepts drone of Yemeni rebels

RIYADH, July 17: The Saudi military says it has intercepted a drone launched at the kingdom's southern border by Iranian-backed rebels in Yemen. Col. Turki al-Maliki, a military spokesman, was quoted in the state-run Saudi Press Agency on Wednesday as saying the drone was launched by the Houthi rebels from Yemen's governorate of Sanaa toward the Saudi city of Jizan. A Saudi-led coalition allied with Yemen's government has been at war with the Houthis since 2015. The fighting has killed tens of thousands of Yemenis, with Saudi-led airstrikes blamed for many civilian deaths. — AP

About 300 migrants rescued in Mediterranean

MADRID, July 17: Nearly 300 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were rescued at sea overnight between Spain and Morocco, while a woman was found dead on one of the four boats, Spain's maritime rescue service said on Wednesday. The service saved 220 people, including 57 women and four minors, in the Alboran Sea, the stretch of the western Mediterranean between the two countries, a spokeswoman said. The woman's body was found aboard one of the boats, she added. The cause of her death is unknown, she said. — AFP

Venezuela frees musician jailed after blasting govt

CARACAS, July 17: Authorities in Venezuela on Tuesday released from prison a young musician who was jailed six weeks ago after taking to social media to vent her frustration against President Nicolas Maduro's government Karen Palacios blasted the government in a message that went viral after losing her job as top clarinetist in the National Philharmonic. Her mother says a week later two strangers appeared at their home saying the 25-year-old was needed for an interview at the presidential palace. — AP

HK elders march to support young demonstrators

HONG KONG, July 17: Some 2,000 Hong Kong senior citizens, including a popular actress, are marching in a show of support for youths at the forefront of monthlong protests against a contentious extradition bill in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory. Wearing white tops and black pants, the seniors also slammed alleged police brutality in the latest protest on Sunday in Hong Kong's Sha Tin district, where violent scuffles in a shopping mall saw dozens injured and over 40 people detained. — AP

Cambodia to return waste to US, Canada

PHNOM PENH, July 17: Cambodia will send back 1,600 tonnes of plastic waste found in shipping containers to the US and Canada, an official said Wednesday, as Southeast Asian countries revolt against an onslaught of rubbish shipments. China's decision to ban foreign plastic waste imports last year threw global recycling into chaos, leaving developed nations struggling to find countries to send their trash. — AFP
