van-truck collision
BANGKOK, Aug 18: A van collision in eastern Thailand killed 11 and injured four on Sunday, local media reported. The chartered van was carrying Laotian workers from Sa Kaeo Province for visa renewal at the Chanthaburi immigration checkpoint. Police said on TV that they suspected the van driver might have dozed off behind the wheel as the van went into the opposite lane where it crashed head-on with the oncoming truck. Rescue workers were seen pulling the injured out of the truck. Ambulance van also rushed to the scene. — Xinhua
Roadside bomb kills two
soldiers in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, Aug 18: Pakistani intelligence officials say a roadside bomb attack has killed two army soldiers in the country's northwest. The officials say the planted bomb exploded Saturday afternoon when a security forces vehicle was patrolling in Ladha area of South Waziristan. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but past such attacks have been claimed by Pakistani Taliban. — AP
5.0-magnitude quake hits Taiwan
BEIJING, Aug 18: A 5.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Hualien County in eastern Taiwan at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). Lawyers threaten to boycott Erdogan's courts ceremony

Four die in Romania hospital attack
BUCHAREST, Aug 18 : Four people have died and nine were injured after being attacked by a patient in a psychiatric hospital, Romanian press reports said on Sunday. They said a 38-year-old man who had admitted himself to the hospital in Sapoca, northeast of the capital Bucharest, entered a treatment room and attacked other patients with a transfusion stand. — AFP
