Nepal mudslide kills eight persons

KATHMANDU, July 23: A mudslide buried houses in two remote mountain villages in Nepal on Tuesday, killing eight people and leaving two others missing, officials said. Government Administrator Yadhunath Poudyal said the mudslide at dawn Tuesday buried at least five houses while residents were sleeping. — AP

Wildfire mostly under control in Portugal

LISBON, July 23: Emergency services in Portugal say they have brought under control 90 per cent of a huge wildfire which has raged for four days and injured 39 people. But officials are warning on Tuesday that forecasts for afternoon temperatures close to 40 degrees Celsius and gusting winds could drive the flames further through dense pine and eucalyptus forests on hilly terrain. — AP

Former Chinese premier Li Peng dies at 90

BEIJING, July 23: Former Chinese Premier Li Peng, has died at the age of 90, state media have announced. Mr Li died on Monday evening in Beijing of an unspecified illness, state news agency Xinhua said. He served in several top positions in China in the 1980s and 1990s. But he was best known as the "Butcher of Beijing" for his role in the Tiananmen Square crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in 1989. Soldiers killed hundreds of unarmed civilians. Mr Li ordered martial law to break up the protests. He later defended his actions as a "necessary" step. — BBC

Trial to open for Philippine journalist

MANILA, July 23: High-profile Philippine journalist Maria Ressa's libel trial opens Tuesday in a case that press freedom advocates see as government retaliation for her news site's critical reporting on President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa, who leads online outlet Rappler and was named a Time Magazine "Person of the Year" in 2018 for her journalism, is out on bail and faces years in prison if convicted. This case is among a string of criminal charges that have hit Ressa and Rappler over the past year, prompting allegations that authorities are targeting her and her team for their work. — AFP

Haitian president names new PM

PORT-AU-PRINCE, July 23: Haitian President Jovenel Moise on Monday named Fritz William Michel as the new prime minister, after Jean Michel Lapin announced his resignation earlier in the day. "Following the resignation of Mr. Lapin, I chose, in consultation with the leaders of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, citizen Fritz William Michel as PM," Moise tweeted on Monday. Michel's nomination must be approved by legislators. — Xinhua
