Zimbabwe's president takes oath amid US censure over vote

HARARE, Aug 26: Emmerson Mnangagwa was officially sworn in as president of Zimbabwe on Sunday after winning a bitterly contested election that marked the country's first vote since Robert Mugabe was ousted from power. "I Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa swear that as president of the republic of Zimbabwe I will be faithful to Zimbabwe (and) will obey, uphold and defend the constitution of Zimbabwe," Mnangagwa declared to thousands of supporters at a stadium in Harare. — AFP

Millions in Idlib brace for Syrian government assault

IDLIB, Aug 26: Nearly three million Syrians living in the northwestern province of Idlib are bracing for a possible government assault, which neighbouring Turkey has warned would result in a large-scale humanitarian disaster. Tourist bus crash leaves 16 dead in Bulgaria

SOFIA, Aug 26: At least 16 people were killed and five gravely injured when a tourist bus flipped over and plunged down a steep slope in Bulgaria, Interior Minister Valentin Radov said. Five people were in extremely grave condition, the minister said without giving further details. — TASS
