IS assault kills 92 US-backed forces in East Syria

BEIRUT, Nov 26: An assault by the Islamic State group in eastern Syria has killed at least 92 US-backed fighters in three days, a war monitor said Monday. It was the highest death toll the jihadist group has inflicted against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in a single offensive, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. — AFP

Back my Brexit deal or risk more rift, May to tell MPs

LONDON, Nov 26: Rejecting the Brexit deal will be risky and lead to "division and uncertainty", Prime Minister Theresa May will say to MPs who oppose her plan. Her Commons speech comes after the 27 other EU leaders approved the terms of the UK's exit at a summit on Sunday. Mrs May now has to persuade politicians in the UK Parliament to back the deal. Philippines' volcano spews ash

MANILA, Nov 26: Mount Mayon, the most active volcano in the Philippines, spewed ash on Monday and is "at a moderate level of unrest," the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. Phivolcs Chief Renato Solidum said two phreatic eruptions were observed between 7:59 a.m. to 8:05 a.m. local time on Monday. — Xinhua

Apartment fire kills six in Switzerland

GENEVA, Nov 26: Six people, including children, were killed and some 20 people were hospitalized in the early hours Monday in an apartment fire in the northwestern Swiss city of Solothurn, local media reported. The Swiss public broadcaster RTS reported that the fire broke out shortly after 2 am (0100 GMT) in one of the lower floors of the apartment. — Xinhua

British academic pardoned by UAE

LONDON, Nov 26: A British academic who was jailed for spying in the United Arab Emirates has been freed after a pardon. Matthew Hedges, 31, denied spying and said he had been researching his PhD. His wife, Daniela Tejada, who appealed for clemency, said she was "elated" and "can't wait to have him back home". The UAE issued the pardon as part of a series of orders on the country's National Day anniversary. However, a spokesman said Mr Hedges was "100 per cent a secret service operative". — BBC

Turkey police inspecting Yalova villa in Khashoggi probe

ISTANBUL, Nov 26: Saudi Arabia claims that Jamal Khashoggi died in a physical altercation inside its consulate in Istanbul. Turkish police are carrying out inspections at a villa in the northwestern province of Yalova in relation to the investigation into the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the state-run Anadolu news agency and other media said on Monday. Police are searching a villa in the Samanli village of the Termal district in Yalova, Anadolu said. No further details were immediately available. — Reuters

India cautious as it tries to recover American’s body

NEW DELHI, Nov 26: Indian officials have traveled repeatedly in recent days near the remote island where an American missionary was killed by people who have long resisted the outside world. But they have not set foot onto North Sentinel Island since the killing, and it remains unclear if they will.
