Former Tehran mayor to die for killing wife
TEHRAN, July 30: Iran's state TV says a former mayor of Tehran who also served as one of the country's vice presidents was sentenced to death for killing his wife. Tuesday's report quotes judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili as saying that Mohammad Ali Najafi was convicted of fatally shooting his wife, Mitra Ostad. The verdict can be appealed within 20 days. — AP
Man arrested in Canada for slaying four
MARKHAM, July 30: Canadian police have charged a 23-year-old man with first-degree murder after four bodies were found in a home north of Toronto. York Regional Police Constable Andy Pattenden said Monday that Menhaz Zaman faces four counts of first-degree murder after the bodies of three adult women and one man were found in the home. — AP
High-level Xinjiang official faces graft charge
BEIJING, July 30: China's anti-corruption watchdog said Tuesday it is investigating a high-level official in the northwest Xinjiang region, the latest to be ensnared in President Xi Jinping's sweeping campaign against graft. Enwaer Tursun, an ethnic Uighur, had worked his way up in his native Xinjiang, eventually rising to the post of deputy secretary-general of the region's People's Congress in 2017. Some ethnic Uighurs like Tursun have worked alongside members of China's majority Han population to implement Beijing's policies in the region. — AFP
Malaysia's new king calls for racial unity
KUALA LUMPUR, July 30: Malaysia's sports-loving Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah called for racial unity as he was installed Tuesday as the country's 16th king under a unique rotating monarchy system. It was a double celebration for Sultan Abdullah from central Pahang state, who turned 59 the same day. He was picked as Malaysia's new ruler in January, after Sultan Muhammad V from northeast Kelantan state abruptly resigned after just two years on the throne in the first abdication in the nation's history.-AP
Missile launcher detected in bag at US airport
WASHINGTON, July 30: US authorities said on Monday a missile launcher was confiscated from a checked bag at an airport near the capital city of Washington, D.C. Officers at Baltimore/Washington International airport found the launcher during routine screening, The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said in a statement. The owner of the bag said he was an active military personnel traveling home from Kuwait and he wanted to keep the missile launcher as a souvenir, said the TSA. "Fortunately the item was not a live device," the TSA said. "It was confiscated and handed over to the state fire marshal for safe disposal. The man was permitted to catch his flight." — Xinhua
