Pompeo to meet Kim in

North Korea on Sunday

WASHINGTON, Oct 03: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Sunday to push forward denuclearization efforts, the State Department said. Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Pompeo would also travel to Japan, South Korea and China. — AFP

Turkish troops enter Syria rebel zone

KAMMARI, Syria, Oct 03 : A Turkish military convoy entered rebel-held northwestern Syria early on Wednesday, an AFP correspondent reported, as the deadline for establishing a buffer zone between rebel and government forces draws closer. At least 40 vehicles, including trucks and armoured personnel carriers, were seen moving slowly south along a main highway under the cover of darkness. The troops they were carrying are expected to be deployed at "observation posts" Turkey has already set up in rebel-held areas of Idlib and Aleppo provinces. — AFP

Several migrants drown in

Guinea-Bissau boat capsize

BISSAU, Oct 03: A small boat carrying migrants has capsized off Guinea-Bissau, a port official said, adding that the vessel may have had more than 60 people on board when it set off. Commander Siga Batista said the pirogue, a narrow wooden fishing vessel, sank on Monday night off the impoverished West African country, which has 200 kilometres (120 miles) of coastline and no patrol ships to save lives on the high seas. — AFP

Indian hospital evacuates 250

patients after fire in pharmacy

KOLKATA, Oct 03: A fire broke out on Wednesday in a pharmacy at a state-run medical college and hospital complex in eastern India, causing panic among around 250 patients who were evacuated to safe wards. Dr. Nirmal Mazi, a doctor at the hospital, said no injuries were reported in the blaze. Television images showed some of the patients being shifted with their saline drips. Some could be seen lying on the floor waiting for help. — AP

China orders actress to

pay massive tax fine

BEIJING, Oct 03: Chinese tax authorities have ordered "X-Men" star Fan Bingbing and companies she represents to pay taxes and penalties totaling $130 million, ending speculation over the fate of one of the country's highest-profile entertainers three months after she disappeared from public view. Of the total amount, Fan is being personally fined around $70 million for tax evasion, according to an announcement carried Wednesday by China's official Xinhua News Agency, citing tax authorities. Fan would not be investigated for criminal responsibility for tax evasion as long as the taxes, fines and late fees amounting to nearly 900 million yuan ($130 million) are paid on time, the report said. — AP

France nabs copter jailbreak gangster

PARIS, Oct 03: A gangster who made a Hollywood-esque helicopter jailbreak was arrested in northern France on Wednesday after three months on the run, sources close to the case said. Notorious French robber Redoine Faid was apprehended in the Oise region north of Paris along with his brother Rachid and two other family members, one source said, confirming earlier media reports. A massive manhunt was launched after Faid's daring July 01 escape, in which two heavily armed accomplices used smoke bombs and angle grinders to break through doors and whisk him to a waiting helicopter. — AFP
