May to meet EU leaders tomorrow

BRUSSELS, Feb 05: EU president Jean-Claude Juncker will meet Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday, the EU said, as Brussels and London seek ways to save the Brexit deal. Plans for Britain to leave the bloc on March 29 under a withdrawal agreement signed last year were thrown into doubt when British lawmakers rejected the accord. Brussels is now waiting for May to formally request renewed talks, while warning that the agreement itself can not at this stage be reopened for discussion. — AFP

Pakistan premier, President back Kashmir rebels

ISLAMABAD, Feb 05: Pakistan's prime minister and president have offered support for rebels in the Indian part of the disputed Himalayan territory of Kashmir. Pakistan is also holding rallies on Tuesday in the Pakistani-controlled sector of the territory and elsewhere in support of the Kashmiri rebels, marking the annual Day of Solidarity with Kashmir. — AP

Yemen’s warring groups discuss prisoner exchange

AMMAN, Feb 05: Yemen's government and the Houthi rebels are meeting in Jordan for talks on implementing a stalled prisoner exchange agreed upon in December. The UN envoy Martin Griffiths says Tuesday the three-day meeting aims to "finalise the list of prisoners and detainees to be released and exchanged." — AP

Bosnia declares emergency after heavy flooding

SARAJEVO, Feb 05: Heavy rain and melting snow caused rivers to burst their banks and cause flooding across Bosnia, damaging houses and blocking roads. A bridge in the capital, Sarajevo, collapsed after the River Zeljeznica overflowed. Milder weather has been witnessed following last month's sub-zero conditions. — Al Jazeera

Lanka ready for hanging drug convicts

COLOMBO, Feb 05: Sri Lanka is ready to execute five drug convicts and end its 42-year capital punishment moratorium once President Maithripala Sirisena signs the death warrants and a hangman is appointed, officials said on Tuesday. Sirisena announced last year a tougher line on spiralling narcotics-related crime including executions for repeat drug offenders. — AFP

Somali security forces kill 40 militants

MOGADISHU, Feb 05: Somali National Intelligence Service Agency (NISA) said Tuesday that it had killed 40 al-Shabab fighters in the country's southern region. Security forces launched a wide-scale operation in Farsoley village in Lower Shabelle region on Saturday, NISA said in a statement. Somali security forces are conducting operations against the al-Qaida-affiliated group, al-Shabab in central and southern regions. — Xinhua

22 IS suspects detained in Istanbul

ISTANBUL, Feb 05: Turkish police on Tuesday detained at least 22 people in Istanbul over their suspected links to the Islamic State (IS), local media reported. Police launched simultaneous operations in 27 locations across the city to capture the suspects, the private NTV broadcaster said. The detainees were allegedly seeking to recruit new members and collect financial aid to the families of IS members. — Xinhua

HONG KONG, Feb 05: Chinese communities around the world welcomed the Year of the Pig on Tuesday, ushering in the Lunar New Year with prayers, family feasts and shopping sprees. In mainland China over the past week, hundreds of millions of people have crammed into trains, buses, cars and planes to reach family and friends in the world's largest annual migration, emptying the country's megacities of much of the migrant workforce. — AFP
