10 civilians die in Afghanistan bomb attack

SHARAN, Jan 07: At least 10 civilians were killed and 13 others wounded after a bomb ripped through a district bazaar in eastern Afghan province of Paktika on Monday, a local official said. "Ten martyred and 13 wounded civilians were admitted to a main hospital in the provincial capital Sharan city Monday morning following a bomb attack in Jani Khil district," Dr. Mohammad Raffah, a provincial health official said. — Xinhua

Israel launches further Hamas strikes

JERUSALEM, Jan 07: The Israeli army said on Monday it had carried out further air raids against Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip in response to a rocket being fired over its border. The Israeli air defence system intercepted the rocket which was fired overnight from the Hamas-ruled coastal enclave, the army said. Planes and a helicopter gunship then raided "terror targets within the organisation's military camp in the northern Gaza Strip," the statement said. — AFP

Snow disrupts transport in Alps

BERLIN, Jan 07: Authorities in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland have closed roads and some train lines due to heavy snowfall in the region. The German news agency dpa reported on Monday that a 44-year-old man died in Wackersberg in Bavaria when he was hit by snow-laden branches. Three skiers in Austria and one woman in Bavaria died in weather-related incidents over the weekend. Officials warned that the risk for avalanches in the northern Alps remains high. In parts of southern Bavaria, schools were closed on Monday because of the weather conditions. — AP

Tokyo policeman commits suicide

TOKYO, Jan 07: Tokyo police are investigating the suicide of an officer in charge of traffic control near the scene of a New Year's Eve car ramming attack that injured nine people, police and media said. The attack in Tokyo's famed Harajuku fashion district saw 21-year-old Kazuhiro Kusakabe drive a vehicle into crowds, leaving at least one person with serious injuries. The day after the incident, a 36-year-old officer from the local traffic department was found dead in the basement of Harajuku police station, according to Tokyo police. — AFP

Man 'set himself on fire' at Turkish consulate

THE HAGUE, Jan 07: Dutch police say that a man has been taken to the hospital after reportedly setting himself on fire in the Turkish consulate in the port city of Rotterdam. Police spokesman Gijs van Nimwegen says officers were called to the consulate around 9 am (0800 GMT) on Monday to deal with reports of a self-immolation. Van Nimwegen declined to confirm that the man set himself ablaze, saying that police do not give out details about cases of attempted suicide. — AP

Ship sinks off Black Sea coast

ANKARA, Jan 07: Turkey's state-run news agency says authorities have launched a search and rescue mission after a ship sunk off the Black Sea. Anadolu Agency, citing Interior Ministry officials, says the operation was launched Monday after authorities received a distress signal from a Panama-flagged ship off the Turkish coast of Samsun. It said at least three crew members have been rescued, and that a coast guard boat and a helicopter are searching for other crew members. — AP
