Police shoot knifeman in HK station

HONG KONG, Nov 07: Police shot a man wielding a knife inside a busy Hong Kong subway station on Wednesday after he tried to attack them, officials said. It is rare for police to shoot suspects in Hong Kong, where it is illegal for the public to carry firearms. Officers tried to question him in Sham Shui Po station during a routine security search but he then pulled a six-inch (15-centimetre) knife from his backpack, divisional commander Chow Ngai-kong told reporters. — AFP

Malaysia court to resume Kim Jong murder trial

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 07: A Malaysian court on Wednesday set Jan 07 for two Southeast Asian women charged with murdering the North Korean leader's half brother to begin their defense, as their lawyers complained that some witnesses were unreachable. A High Court judge in August found there was enough evidence to infer that Indonesian Siti Aisyah and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong, along with four missing North Korean suspects, had engaged in a "well-planned conspiracy" to kill Kim Jong Nam. — AP

Taliban attack kills eight policemen in Afghanistan

KABUL, Nov 07: An Afghan official says the Taliban killed eight policemen and wounded three in an attack on two checkpoints in western Farah province. A member of the provincial council, Dadullah Qani, says the attack on Tuesday night took place on the outskirts of the provincial capital, Farah, and triggered an hourslong battle in which the Taliban were beaten back. The Taliban didn't immediately comment the attack. — AP

Pak army officer dies trying to defuse bomb

ISLAMABAD, Nov 07: The Pakistani army says an officer died while trying to defuse a roadside bomb found during a sweep in the country's northwestern tribal regions bordering Afghanistan. Wednesday's military statement says the explosion in the Mohmad Gat area of Mohmand tribal region killed Capt. Zargham Fareed and seriously wounded another soldier. It wasn't immediately clear when the explosion took place. Pakistan's tribal regions along the Afghan border have in the past served as sanctuaries for Islamic militants. — AP

Barcelona train station re-opens after bomb scare

BARCELONA, Nov 07: Authorities in Barcelona say the city's main train station has reopened after it was closed during Wednesday's rush hour while police searched for possible explosives in a suspicious suitcase. The Mossos d'Esquadra regional police in Catalonia said the explosives unit was activated at the high-speed railway tracks of Barcelona's central Sants station after a security scanner identified an object shaped like a possible explosive device inside a suitcase at 8.0 am Wednesday (0700GMT). — AP
