Rights groups accuse Jammeh for death of 50 migrants

ACCRA, May 16: A paramilitary unit controlled by former Gambian president Yahya Jammeh was accused Wednesday by rights groups of being behind the killings of more than 50 West African migrants in 2005. Human Rights Watch and TRIAL International said they interviewed 30 former Gambian officials, including 11 officers, and a survivor of the round-up as part of a joint investigation. The migrants -- 44 Ghanaians and several Nigerians, Senegalese, as well as a Togolese-were arrested on a beach in Gambia while trying to reach Europe.—AFP

Indian meteorological deptt issues fresh thunderstorm alert

NEW DELHI, May 16: India's meteorological department Wednesday issued a fresh warning of thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds in the national capital and its outskirts. The advisory came hours after a massive dust storm hit Delhi and national capital region (NCR) early Wednesday at around 3:00 a.m. local time, uprooting trees and disrupting power supply. India's state-run broadcaster All India Radio (AIR), quoting the latest warning, said thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds would very likely take place at isolated places. — Xinhua

Southern California building explosion claims one life

ALISO VIEJO, May 16: An explosion rocked a Southern California medical office building Tuesday, killing one person and injuring three others, authorities said. Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy said 70 firefighters were dispatched in response to a 1:09 p.m. Tuesday call from Aliso Viejo. The blast involved a building under renovation but the cause was not immediately known, Fennessy said. The explosion blew siding off the walls, exposing insulation and framing. Federal, state and local investigators were on the scene. — AP

Vietnam to build high-speed rail routes by 2030

HANOI, May 16: The Vietnamese Transport Ministry plans to submit in the 2019-2020 period to the Vietnamese government a project on building the first high-speed rail routes which will link capital Hanoi and central Vinh city, as well as Ho Chi Minh City and central Nha Trang city. Construction of the high-speed rail routes between Hanoi and Vinh, as well as between Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang are expected to be completed by 2030.—Xinhua

Meghan's father will not attend wedding for surgery

LONDON, May 16: More doubt has been cast on whether Meghan Markle's father will attend his daughter's wedding to Prince Harry on Saturday, as it is reported he is due to have heart surgery. Thomas Markle had told US website TMZ he would not go amid a row over paparazzi photographs; then that he would; then that he could not, due to a planned heart procedure. — BBC
