Tk 5.0b allocation proposed for IT sector

Money to be used as start-up fund to support grassroots entrepreneurship

FE REPORT | June 12, 2026 00:00:00

Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday proposed an allocation of Tk 5.0 billion to boost the information technology sector and spur grassroots entrepreneurship in the upcoming fiscal year.

"Considering the potential of information technology, I propose an allocation of Tk 500 crore (Tk 5.0 billion) in the fiscal year 2026-27 to encourage new entrepreneurs in this sector," he said.

The allocation would be used as a "start-up fund" to support the development of women and young entrepreneurs, as well as women's advancement, he said.

The minister noted that the fund aimed to provide critical early-stage financing to help young innovators establish competitive local enterprises.

He said the government believed that with adequate support, the talented and creative youths of Bangladesh would be capable of establishing world-class technology hubs in the country, comparable to Silicon Valley in the United States, Shenzhen in China, Singapore, or Dubai, in the future.

Eligible start-ups and technology-based ventures will enjoy zero turnover tax.

Furthermore, registered start-up enterprises will receive complete exemptions from the 15 per cent VAT on their services, imported services, and office rentals until June 30, 2035.
