BENAPOLE, Sept 10: A total of 0.231 million pieces of chicken eggs imported from India came through Benapole land port in Jashore on Monday (September 9).

This is the first consignment of eggs imported from India through Benapole port this year to curb the surging prices of eggs in the domestic markets.

Earlier in November last year, a total of 61,950 pieces of eggs brought in from India entered the land port.

Masudur Rahman, revenue officer of Customs Checkpost Cargo Branch, confirmed that chicken eggs brought in 400 cartons from India by a 10-wheeler truck through Benapole land port arrived at 11:00 am on Monday.

According to customs sources, the invoice value of these imported eggs is US$11,272. The import invoice price of a dozen eggs is $0.56; accordingly, each piece of egg will be priced at Tk 5 in Bangladeshi currency.

Besides, 33 per cent government revenue has to paid on the invoice value of each dozen of eggs, which will take the price of each egg to Tk7.

Dhaka-based importer company Hydro Land Solutions has imported the 0.231 million pieces of chicken eggs from India while the exporter farm was Sri Lakshmi Enterprises of Kolkata.

Ratul Enterprises, the C&F agent, filed the necessary documents at the customs house to clear the consignment of eggs on behalf of the importer.

Binay Krishna Mandal, in-charge of Benapole Livestock Department, said that the imported eggs were found to be all right after testing whether they were fit for consumption.

"We received the documents of the importer concerned. Arrangements are being made for speedy release of the egg shipment," he also said.

Benapole Customs House Joint Commissioner Shafayet Hossain said a consignment of chicken eggs imported from India has been kept at the transshipment yard at Benapole port. The consignment of eggs was tested on Monday.

The egg consignment will be released as soon as possible after collection of the government revenue, he also said, adding instructions have been given to the customs officials of the transshipment yard for speedy delivery of the consignment.
