NAOGAON, Mar 17: Naogaon district, since the last few years, has been seeing gradual increase in farming of carrot, a popular vegetable variety in the country.

Farmers in several upazilas under the district are getting good prices as well as earning handsome amount of money from cultivation of carrot as it needs small quantity of fertiliser and pesticides.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said at least 120 hectares of land have been brought under carrot cultivation in the district this season while it was only 85 hectares last year. The DAE officials said peasants prefer carrot to other vegetables as it takes only 80 to 90 days to grow up and needs less fertilizers and irrigation.

One Abdul Hannan of Naogaon Sadar Upazila said once people of the area cultivated carrot at homestead only. But, now a days they are cultivating the vegetable on acres of land considering its high demand and good market price.

Habibur Rahman of the same upazila informed he cultivated carrot on three bighas of land with a cost of Tk 5,000 per bigha.

I am expecting to pick 130 to 150 maunds of carrot from each bigha of land and sell the produce at Tk 600 per maund, he added.

Jahangir Alam, Agriculture Officer of Manda Upazila DAE stated people of the area are making handsome profit through carrot cultivation due to its good price in the market.
