1,200 female artisans weave hand net on own initiative in Bogra

BOGRA, Jan 20: Around 1200 extreme poor female artisans have become self-reliant weaving hand net with private initiative in Bogra district from last decade.

According to local source the women were passing sorry time few years back as they were had no own crop land for rendering agriculture enterprise. After engaging with profession they have attained financial stability, they added.

In a recent visit the correspondent found the female artisans are passing busy time weaving the hand net from the very early in the morning to late at night. An artisan can make a seven-feet long hand net spending Tk 300 to 400 for fifteen days with assistance of the family members. It is being sold from Tk 900 to 1200 according its quality.

They are making average Tk 300 to 400 in week. The male artisans are providing the parachute yarn from nearby haat and bazaar and female members are making the net in a view to sell them to the customer. The water of the big river Jamuna, Bangalee and Nagor has been dried up and the fishermen are getting unexpected fish species.

The fishermen are purchasing the net to catch the different sort of fishes from the river and water body, said fisherman Jamil Hossain, 34, hailing from Dhunot upazila of the district. The demand of the hand net has been increased from last December, he added.

The wholesalers visit the root level private owned hand net factory to purchase them from the artisan directly. Mitigating local demand they are sending the hand net to the different part of the country immensely.

Municipality Mayor Belal Hossain said, sometimes the artisans suffer for adequate capital to run the profession. If they have been provided easy term loan facilities they would be mostly benefited, he added.
