1.39m cattlehead, poultry birds affected by flood in Tangail district

TANGAIL, July 30: Around 1.39 million cattlehead and poultry birds in 33 unions of five upazilas in the district have so far been affected by the ongoing flood.

The district livestock office sources said they estimated about Tk 45 million loss in dairy and poultry sectors in the district till now.

Some officials at the livestock office said they vaccinated about 3,210 cattle and 32,408 poultry birds. The vaccination programme is going on in full swing in the flood-affected areas, they added.

The district livestock office is providing anthrax and FMD vaccines free of cost among the cattle and poultry farm owners as the animals may be attacked with different diseases after receding flood water.

Meanwhile, so far four cows and 5,300 fowls died in the floodwater, official sources added.

The district livestock office sources said some 1,214 enlisted cattle farms owners have been facing acute fodder shortage. Of the total, 609 cattle farms are seriously affected.

Besides, mobile teams of veterinary doctors are working in the affected area.

Sources said some of the cattle owners who took shelter at flood center were forced to sell their animals at lower prices.

District Livestock officer SM Awal Haque said, "We are trying to help the farm owners by supplying emergency fodder and vaccine."
