SYLHET, May 21: As many as 210 primary schools in Habiganj district are in a pitiable state due to absence of repair work.

The children have been attending these schools, located mostly in the low lying region known as 'haor' areas, since there are no alternate arrangements, locals said.

The situation gets worst specially during the rainy season as rain water enters into the classrooms. Plaster on the walls of many school buildings have been damaged while cracks have also developed.

The school authorities said they did not receive any response from the Education Department even after submitting repeated appeals in this connection.

During a visit to the Haruni Sarkari Primary School in Baniachang upazila, this correspondent saw several cracks on its wall while the roof also was damaged in places.

Children attend their classes putting their lives at risk.

The building's doors and windows were also found broken. During the rainy season it becomes almost impossible to continue classes, school sources said.

Out of the total 1,052 government primary schools in the district, these 210 are risky, said an official. A list of these had been prepared and submitted to the higher authority for required steps, he added.

Of the schools, highest 63 are in Baniachang, 11 in Ajmiriganj, 24 in Bahubal, 22 in Nabiganj, 40 in Madhabpur, nine in Lakhai, 40 in Chunarughat and one in Habiganj Sadar uapzila.

"We have prepared the list of risky or vulnerable school buildings, numbering 210 in total and sent it to the capital. For the most vulnerable ones there might be some immediate move for reconstruction, he added. We hope the others would soon be included in a major development programme of the government for reconstructing those", the official added.
