RANGPUR, Dec 09: At least 24 cattle heads died of hoof disease during last one week at different areas under Rajarhat upazila of Kurigram district.

Sources said hoof disease, locally known as "khura rog" has taken a serious turn in the upazila in the last one week, triggering concern among the cattle owners and farmers.

According to sources, farmers seem to be helpless in combating the disease as more than 200 cattle have been attacked by the infectious hoof-disease in the upazila.

The intensity of the disease is also on the rise. Due to lack of adequate vaccine farmers are failing to combat the disease, sources alleged.

As the affected cattle develop symptoms like high temperature, drooling of saliva, blister in tongue, they become too feeble to take solid food and eventually die, sources further alleged.

A number of cattle farmers alleged that though they informed the livestock officials of the matter but they are yet to take necessary steps in this regard.

As preventive and curative measures are meagre, the affected cattle are becoming weak and awaiting death, they also said.

Ashraful, a cattle farmer of Sukhdev village said his four cattle heads have been attacked by the disease, of them two cows died few days ago but he could not provide treatment for them owing to scarcity of vaccine. Presently, he is apprehensive about the survival of his rest of the cattle, he added.

In this situation the affected cattle farmers urged the authority concerned to take necessary steps so that they can protect their cattle from the attack of the disease.

Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Jobaidul Kabir said that the disease is most contagious and belongs to the viral group. The stock of vaccine is not sufficient in comparison with the number of cattle available across the upazila.

They have taken the matter seriously and are trying their level best to combat the adverse circumstances, he added.
