37 fishermen held in Manikganj for catching Hilsa

MANIKGANJ, Oct 23 (BSS): A total of 37 fishermen, who resorted to Hilsa catching defying the government ban on catching mother Hilsa at different points, were arrested on Wednesday in the rivers Padma and Jamuna of the district.

The drives led by S M Ferdous, Deputy Commissioner of Manikganj, started around 3 am and continued up to morning.

Dr. Moniruzzaman, district fisheries officer, AKM Firoj Mahmud, UNO, Shibalaya, and Sabrina Sharmin, UNO, Daulatpur, were present.

Among the arrestees 24 were awarded jail for one year each and 13 others were fined Tk. 39,000. 80 kilograms of Hilsa fishes were also seized during the drives.
